B.ARCH Undergraduate Degree Program

5 YEARS (10 Terms)

SCI-Arc’s undergraduate program integrates the development of knowledge of a wide range of conceptual and practical skills, from critical thinking to technical expertise, to create a fluid and holistic approach to the education of the becoming contemporary architect. Throughout the program, emphasis is placed on the development of the individual student's personal growth, self reflection and knowledge of architectural design issues, including theoretical constructs and advancements in building technology, and ranging from applications of high-performance "intelligent" materials to considerations for sustainable practices.

B.Arch Design Studio Work (Spring 2012)

The undergraduate curriculum is built around an integrated sequence of design studios, Visual Studies, History and Theory, Media and Technology courses, into which interdisciplinary seminars in the Arts, Sciences, and Humanities are woven. Following the foundation and core sequence, upper-division courses are offered in Professional Practice and related subjects. Over five years of study, students become actively engaged in the discussion of the practice of architecture and are prepared to join the workforce.

General Education Requirements
In addition to a core program built on design studios and professional architecture seminars in the areas of Applied Studies, Cultural Studies, and Visual Studies, undergraduates seeking the B.Arch degree must successfully complete a series of General Education requirements. These General Education courses at SCI-Arc help to introduce students to advanced critical thinking.

For students entering in the Fall 2013 class, all General Education courses will be offered as a part of the undergraduate curriculum and must be taken at SCI-Arc and be completed prior to beginning the Fourth Year of study. However, prior to initial enrollment in the B. Arch program, students have the option to complete all or part of their General Education curriculum at other institutions.

The SCI-Arc General Education courses are divided into two areas of study:

Social Sciences and Humanities:

History of Western OR Eastern Civilization
    Collegiate Writing
    Psychology
    Anthropology
    Economics
    Geography

Natural Science and Mathematics:

    Geological Sciences
    Computer Sciences

Students interested in completing any of these requirements prior to enrolling at SCI-Arc should contact the Recruitment & Outreach office for a list of suggested courses.

Advanced Placement Opportunities
Students who have completed architecture design studio coursework at other schools may apply for Advanced Placement into the SCI-Arc program. This placement is not guaranteed, but is determined by the Admissions Committee upon review of the applicant’s application materials, the most important of which is the portfolio of architectural and creative work. Transfer credit for non-studio courses is awarded by a comparison of course content. Only courses in which the student received a “B” or better are considered for transfer credit.
