The Curatorial Studies program is offered jointly by the Institute of Fine Arts and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, under the supervision of the Joint Committee on Curatorial Studies, which is composed of faculty, curators, and the Directors of both institutions. The purpose of the program is to prepare students for curatorial careers in specialized fields. Problems of museum education and general administration are raised but not emphasized. The course of study for the program normally requires three-and-one-half to four years, including a master's degree in art history. The Certificate in Curatorial Studies is awarded at the completion of all requirements.
Curatorial Studies Courses are open to all students. Curatorial Studies: Exhibition Practices is offered during the fall semester. Curatorial Studies: Collections and Curating is offered during the spring semester. Students in the Curatorial Studies courses receive hands on training in exhibition planning. Past exhibitions that have been featured in these courses are: Man, Myth, and Sensual Pleasures: Jan Gossart's Renaissance; The World of Khubilai Khan: Chinese Art in the Yuan Dynasty; Venice and the Islamic World, 828–1797; and Prague, The Crown of Bohemia, 1347–1437.
Curatorial Studies Alumni have held leadership positions at some of the world’s foremost art institutions, such as: The Art Institute of Chicago; The Frick Collection; J. Paul Getty Museum; Library of Congress; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; National Gallery, London; Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the Smithsonian Institution.
